2021 Subaru Levorg Spied in Japan, Looks Similar to the Pre-Production Prototype

In November 2019, Subaru was sending off the first generation of the Levorg with the V-Sport Special Edition. A family hauler with a 2.0-liter boxer turbo that churns out 300 PS (296 horsepower) and more than enough torque for this displacement, the last hurrah of the original was preceded in October 2019 by the all-new Levorg with a similarly new 1.8-liter engine.

Described as a prototype by its make, the pre-production car revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show previews the real deal that will enter production by the end of 2020 for the 2021 model year. Spied in Japan in pretty much the same specification as the prototype, the second-gen Levorg before you features a red stripe on the license plate. So, what does it actually mean?

Called a Kari Number - with Kari meaning temporary - the diagonal red line indicates that the vehicle can be driven from three to five days. Better still, Kari Numbers are cheaper than actual license plates and they can be requested pretty much on the go at the local city hall.

Turning our attention back to the vehicle per se, only the design and finish of the wheels differ from the pre-production car. The color, LED headlamps, tinted rear windows, and scooped hood are all there, along with what appears to be a dual exhaust system with chromed outlets.

The FA18 turbo boxer is paired to the Lineartronic CVT and no manual option whatsoever. Featuring “lean-burn technology” that “balances acceleration and environmental performance at a high level,” the 1.8-liter engine should be at least at good as the FB16 before it. Chances are that Subaru developed it to bridge the gap between the FB16 and FA20, with the latter engine utilized by the V-Sport Special Edition mentioned in the first paragraph.

If everything goes according to plan, it’s understood that Subaru will start taking orders for the JDM model in July 2020. Not long after that, the Levorg STI Sport will join the lineup with go-faster mods.
