2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Spotted Testing M Parts at the Nurburgring

Despite declining sales, German automakers refuse to give up on the 4-door coupe segment. This is the all-new 4 Series Gran Coupe, a member of the new 4er family that was recently spotted at the Nurburgring track.

For a while, it looked like the 4 Series Gran Coupe would be discontinued due to slow sales. All signs pointed to the i4 electric car as its direct replacement. But the prototype in these photos is definitely not electric.

In most ways, the i4 and the Gran Coupe are the same. They might even share platforms or some exterior components (like headlights. However, where the i4 has electric motors and a big battery, this test vehicle is probably propelled by a 3-liter turbo engine.

We think it's the M440i Gran Coupe, a model that technically hasn't existed before. We can see the trademark blue brakes usually fitted to M Performance models, as well as bigger brakes and room for the rectangular exhaust pipes.

It's a little early to talk about styling, but giant kidney grilles are a given. Both the 4 Series coupe and the i4 have such exaggerated features. Meanwhile, the sharp side skirts resemble those offered though the M accessory line.

An M440i model should boast an output of about 382 horsepower. It's basically the same system as in the Toyota GR Supra, though BMW will offer xDrive AWD, potentially resulting in better 0 to 60 times.

Other powertrains will obviously be available. America will just get the 430i with a 2-liter turbo, but Europe will have access to at least three diesels, the 420d, 430d, and M440d. We want to keep our fingers crossed for the M4 Gran Coupe, packing 503 horsepower and xDrive to take on the Audi RS5 Sportback. But BMW probably wants the flashy new i4 to be the fastest four-door they offer.
