2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Spied Up Close, Looks Bigger

The Mercedes GLC-Class is one of the best selling models in the global premium market. However, competition from American automakers as well as BMW is pretty strong, and many changes will thus have to be made for the all-new generation.

This is it, the GLC II, spied only for the second time ever with the same level of camouflage. However, the prototype was shot from a shorter distance, allowing us to see some of the simpler design features, such as the headlights or the long taillights.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this is actually a facelift for the EQC full-electric crossover from the shape of those LEDs. Though to be fair, all Mercedes models are becoming more streamlined.

It seems the thing GLC customers value above everything else is usability, as this prototype appears to be bigger than before. However, this is also to be expected, considering many other Mercedes models have grown from one generation to the next.

The exterior styling is expected to be less polarizing, with fewer distinctive features. This can be both a good and a bad thing. On the inside, it's going to feel like the premium CUV skipped a few generations, as the MBUX infotainment screens will be about as large and advanced as those available in the flagship 2021 S-Class that's also on the way.

Thanks to increased use of aluminum and better fabrication methods, the 2022 GLC's chassis will also by about 110 lbs (50kg) lighter than before. This, in combination with widespread mild-hybrid technology, will make this one of the most efficient 4x4 you can buy.

Unfortunately, we believe it will also stop chasing performance. The GLC 63 S is undoubtedly going to be missed, as its mighty 4-liter twin-turbo V8 is expected to give way to a hybrid 2-liter engine used by the GLC 53.

2022 is the year the GLC II will hit the market, followed about 6 months later by the GLC Coupe.
