2022 Volkswagen Tiguan X Coupe Is Happening, and Here's What It Will Look Like

It's no secret that once a German SUV is famous and profitable enough, it can receive a more expensive coupe version. For many years, crossovers were denied access to this treatment, but Volkswagen decided to bite the bullet with the Tiguan X, a coupe version of the familiar model.

Over the past four years (since the new generation came out), the Tiguan has blossomed into a popular model. It's now the best-selling Volkswagen car and comes in multiple flavors. The upcoming facelift will bring more, namely the R performance model and GTE plug-in hybrid.

The Tiguan Coupe was nothing but a rumor for many years, but it's become clear that China is the key to its existence. A few days ago, the new "Tiguan X" model was spotted undergoing testing there virtually undisguised. The Russian website Kolesa then made the new model seem real with one of their usual accurate renderings.

The prototype showed quite a steeply raked roof, which is not what we expected from them. The American Atlas is based on the same platform and its small cousin, the Atlas Cross Sport, has a kind of fastback design. It looks more like the Audi Q8 than the squished BMW X4/X6.

China has a bewildering variation of Volkswagen crossovers, as in addition to the Tiguan and Atlas (called the Teramont there), they sell about four more models. One of them is called the Tayron, and that's also supposed to get an X-branded coupe.

According to reports dating a few months back, the Tiguan X will also be sold in Europe starting from the end of next year. It will have similar engines, mostly the 2.0 TDI offering between 116 and 240 hp, but also the 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI. An R version with over 300 horsepower might also be considered. Its existence is already mirrored by the Audi Q3 Sportback, also rocking the chopped roof and available with all kinds of engines at a premium.
