It feels like we looked at literally every possible car and brand that could/should switch to a mid-engined layout. However, we missed one, the Cadillac XLR.
Right now, they're trying to rebrand themselves around the Blackwing and crossovers. But everybody needs a halo car, and Cadillac always had a thing about rivaling the German automakers. While the Audi R8 is still in production, wouldn't it be wonderful if they could make a mid-engined luxury supercar for half the price?
Well, any passionate automotive journalist would feel complied to encourage the venture. But Cadillac has tried and failed so much in the past that we know it's a bad idea.
A Cadillac version of the Corvette C8 would be completely missing the point. If you had all the bases covered, a bit of luxury and class would be nice. That's what this rendering by Kleber Silva tries to explore.
But the Corvette will always lack in one area or another because that's just how sports cars and supercars work. Why spend money on seats when the Ferrari gearbox shifts a little faster? Why add chrome when the Lamborghini Huracan has better brakes?
Back around 2005, Cadillac had a car called an XLR. It looked like a Mercedes SL-Class rip-off. It was like a C5 Corvette for people who wanted to pay more and go slower. The only advantages: a badge and not having to hear fiberglass jokes.
And it's not like the 2020/2021 Corvette isn't luxurious. The C8 interior happens to be one of the nicest, most creative we've seen. Sure, build quality isn't perfect, but the same can be said about European cars too.
