Added to the stable for the 1967 model year, the Shelby GT500 is a proper classic with a 7.0-liter leviathan under the hood. Complemented by two 600 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetors and an aluminum intake manifold, this engine’s name says it all - 428 Cobra Jet.
“When we decided to build the carbon-fiber-bodied GT500CR Mustangs, we wanted to work with someone who shared our vision for the future of custom car building,” declared Jason Engel, head honcho of Classic Recreations. “Having a supplier that is equally committed to high-quality craftsmanship and producing innovative vehicles is incredibly important to us and we found that matched commitment in SpeedKore.”
The production process kicks off with the donor vehicle, either a 1967 or a 1968 pony restored with great attention to detail. The carbon-fiber parts are cut by a five-axis CNC machine, cured in an autoclave, and then fitted to the steel tub of the car. Described as “the world’s first officially-licensed Shelby Mustang that is lighter and stronger than the all-steel body” of the original, the GT500CR is available with several powertrain choices.
The Gen 3 Ford Performance Coyote V8 starts off with 490 horsepower (498 PS) at the crankshaft, but the most tantalizing proposition is a hand-built 427 with an intercooled supercharger from ProCharger. This engine is capable of 900 horsepower (912 PS) or so.
As far as standard features are concerned, oversized sway bars and coilover suspension open the list. Power rack-and-pinion steering, Wilwood brakes, forged wheels from American Racing, and sticky rubber from Michelin are also worthy of note. The Pro Touring Track Pack that’s available as an optional extra adds Detroit Speed Engineering suspension, wider wheels and tires for the rear axle, bigger brakes, and mini tubs.
In addition to the Tremec five-speed stick shift that comes standard, a six-speed manual is also available alongside multiple auto options.
