One way to improve performance is to reduce weight, so this is probably the reasoning behind this Toyota Camry looking like the automotive equivalent of Swiss cheese.
This photo popped up on reddit, where it attained near-viral status right away. For all the obvious reasons. It doesn’t come with any type of backstory or at least a word or two on how it came to be, except for the caption “Swiss cheese car,” which is accurate but hardly sufficient.
This looks like a mid-’90s Toyota Camry that’s been drilled out extensively, for purposes known only to whoever embarked on such a task. Everything from the rear bumper to the front wings, and even the B-pillars, has been filled with holes, so you can imagine what a chilly experience this would be driving at higher speeds. Both because of the draft and of how terribly unsafe the whole thing is.
Even the wheels have been drilled out, and it looks like the door handles and the windows have been removed. The fact that the car is parked in what looks like a larger parking lot suggests the possibility that someone drove it there – so it could be getting plenty of time on the road.
While the photo suggests an elaborate and consistent approach to what could be described as a mad attempt at improving performance, it wouldn’t be the first time someone tried it. The Karmann Konnection shop from the UK, which specializes in Porsches, has been working on a very special project called the Lightest 911 Ever for a while.
As you may have guessed, it consists of drilling holes on every surface of the 911, but the exterior body. The shop has been documenting the whole process on social media (#lightest911ever) and, yes, you can still make the argument that structural integrity of the car is being compromised beyond repair, but at least it’s fascinating to watch. And the result is beautiful in a terrifying way, which can’t be said about this Camry.
