In its F-150 spec, Ford's twin-turbocharged 2.7L EcoBoost V6 produces 325 horsepower and a meaty 400 lb-ft of torque, and while we'd had plenty of reason to suspect that it would land in Ford's forthcoming off-road SUV, this is our first official confirmation.
Unveiling the Bronco last November, Ford Performance Off-Road Racing Supervisor Brian Novak dropped a mighty big hint when he said that "even the twin turbos of the EcoBoost engine are representative of what the production Bronco will offer."
Gehrke goes on to say the Bronco R is also fitted with Ford's ten-speed 10R80 automatic transmission - the very same unit that shifts the new Ford Ranger, the 2020 Ford Explorer, the Mustang, and even the F-150 Raptor. Suffice it to say: it can handle plenty more torque than the Bronco's 2.7L will throw at it.
