City cars, electric cars, cars for really boring people, crossovers for large families - Volkswagen is one of the automakers with the largest global reach and palette. But it's always a bad look when you're making money without offering a sports car to the enthusiasts.
Some say that a FWD sports car has no flavor. However, the same is true for mild rice, and you order that with every takeout anyway because it doesn't upset you. It may not be a good drift car, but the VW Scirocco did many things right. Back when the last model was new, over a decade ago, it was cheaper than the Golf GTI that had the same engine. You could have it with adaptive suspension, which was pretty new at the time. Above all, it looked super-sharp, thanks to Walter de Silva, the same guy who penned many stylish Alfas and Audis.
Now, America may have never gotten the Scirocco, but they also pulled the plug in Europe about three years ago. And by then, they were selling only about 10,000 units annually.
But the Scirocco was also neglected for years, especially in the all-important engine department. And having about 30% more torque can be a pretty decent incentive to buy a GTI instead of the 'Rocco.
So what's to be done? Well, this rendering by X-Tomi looks at the option of picking up where we left off. The Golf 8 would donate its platform, as well as some of its design ideas.
We think that may not be the optimal solution. To attract more customers, the Scirocco might need to combine different segments. For example, Europe doesn't have a Jetta right now, so it could become a four-door coupe instead of a two-door one.
