The Torano A9X was built to race at the Bathurst 1000, and only 405 examples were ever made. “A little bit of Bathurst, Brocky and good old Aussie determination all wrapped up in one bloody sexy Hatchback motor car,” Australian Muscle Car Sales says in the listing.
Of these A9Xs, 305 were 4-door sedans and 100 were hatchbacks. Of these hatchbacks, it is believed only 50 or 60 have survived to this day, which makes this one on sale a genuine rarity.
Adding to this rarity status is the fact that it’s one of the four examples painted in Atlantis Blue, and one of two with the contrasting tan vinyl trim combination. All the numbers match and it comes with proper documentation attesting its history as a racing champion, including trophies and Holden Historical Services verification.
This A9X, chassis 92/100, is sold with the original owner’s manual, the build sheet, all factory papers and letters of verification, log books and, to further attest its celebrity status, clippings from the large selection of magazines it’s been featured along the years. It was driven to the top spot in the 1978 and 1979 editions of the Bathurst 1000, and at the Australian Touring Car Championship in the same two years.
With 47,672 km (29,622 miles on the clock), it packs a 5.0-liter V8 producing 240 hp, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. It is listed as in excellent conditions, with all numbers matching and all original parts. It even has the original plastic front spoiler and brake air ducts.
The asking price is AU$495,000, which is roughly $330,000 at today’s rate and it includes the possibility to arrange closed secure transport to your home. Interested parties can view the car at the Sydney showroom or online (see the video below), or arrange for an independent report before buying.
