If the Chevrolet HHR was a person, it would be into live-action role-play. You know, putting on a helmet, grabbing the foam sword, and going to the park with your friends. It was a real hobby before everybody from the Magic the Gathering community started playing World of Warcraft.
Like a fake medieval night, the HHR was covered in shiny plastic trim, some of which would fall off. Chevy usually doesn't do a particularly good job in the reliability department, especially at the bottom end of the market.
It's hard to understand what Chevy was trying to do with this design, other than copy Chrysler. But you've got to remember this was designed right before the crossover era. Maybe 20 years from now, we'll be looking at the Equinox, wondering what they were thinking.
As far as styling is concerned, the HHR heavily copies the 3rd and 4th-generation Suburban, so it's like modern meets mid-century. But that's just for show. The Suburban was a tough family wagon built around a heavy-duty frame. So the HHR is copying the look of a circus strongman while being as dependable as... well, a cheap Chevy from the 2000s.
In any case, the Brazilian rendering artist Kleber Silva has created a modern version of the HHR with the angular headlights of the Trailblazer and a suitably black grille. We can't help but wonder if this was inspired by Doug DeMuro's rencent review.
He calls it an HHR RS, but that would just be a trim level. No, this red paint belongs to an HHR SS with a powerful turbocharged engine and available manual.
