Toyota chose to make the new model only available with a hybrid powertrain. It's a small engine with not a lot of power, while rivals from Honda or Chrysler do offer more.
But as EVs are the ultimate form of green transportation, wouldn't we be better off with a Tesla minivan instead? We think so, and this type of vehicle is ideally suited for the powertrain.
Vans are long, so there's a lot of room between the wheels for a high-capacity battery. Also, you can get away with only one electric motor, which would improve the efficiency of the product. Minivans are generally smooth and aerodynamic, so they already fit the Tesla design language.
Tesla has already tried offering a 7-seat option on multiple vehicles but always fails to make the last row comfortable. In addition, we feel that America's soccer moms and dads would benefit from a relaxing minimalist interior or the added safety of Autopilot.
We've always thought the old Sienna looked like a Tesla, but this Model M rendering by Kleber Silva actually appears to be based on the Pacifica. The thing that really gets our attention is the rear door layout. Easy access is important, but especially so if you're trying to put a child seat in the back. Gullwing doors are fine too, but only if they keep working and don't cost a small fortune to repair.
