The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Is Trekking Into View Soon, Bringing More Heat

We've always liked the plucky Subaru Crosstrek. The lifted, all-wheel-drive hatchback a great mix of utility, off-roadability, and relative space and fuel efficiency. But there is one thing we've always wanted from it: More power. Thankfully, that's finally happening. Officially. Subaru is dangling the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport in front of our noses, promising more information to come next week.

Best of all, the 2.5-liter's fuel economy numbers would be just as good as the smaller 2.0-liter engine's figures. The new engine choice will return 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined per the EPA. We also know that the 2.5-liter will only be offered with Subaru's CVT automatic. We have our fingers crossed that the base six-speed manual option will stick around with the smaller engine (which still carries over for entry-level models) for the 2021 model year.

Subaru's Tom Doll told Automotive News that Crosstrek customers were asking for a stronger engine, and the 2.5-liter boxer—likely the same one found in the current Subaru Outback—will be just what the doctor ordered. We're sure the 2021 model will come with a number of updates to the rest of the lineup, too, but we're most excited by a Crosstrek with a little extra poke. Say, while you're at it Subaru, why not give us that Crosstrek STI we've been dreaming of? In the meantime, look for full details on the new Crosstrek and its burlier engine option soon.
